    Step 1: Prepare the Batter

    In a large bowl, crack the egg (using just the yolk for fluffier waffles, if preferred). Add the self-raising flour and a generous pinch of salt. Mix in the sugar if using, then gradually whisk in the milk and melted butter until smooth. Stir in the vanilla extract, if desired. For fluffier waffles, beat the egg white to soft peaks and gently fold it into the batter. Alternatively, blend all the ingredients together using a blender or immersion blender. This batter can be made 1-2 hours in advance and chilled.

    Step 2: Heat the Waffle Maker

    Preheat your waffle maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Lightly brush the cooking surface with a bit of oil to prevent sticking.

    Step 3: Cook the Waffles
